PORTALS: Multimedia Exploration of Longing in a Digital Age

Tim Fain performs live with virtual accompaniment, dance and film

"It was easy to forget what was real and what was virtual in Portals. The images, Mr. Fain seems to say, are ultimately untrustworthy and whatever true human connection there is lies in the music.”  The Wall Street Journal

ABOUT PORTALS
Inspired by the violin solo from his Book of Longing (performed by Tim Fain), composer Philip Glass wrote Partita for Solo Violin especially for the violinist. The work now serves as the centerpiece of Tim's Portals, an evening-length musical exploration of the human longing for connection in the digital age. In an onstage “dialogue” between live and multimedia works. The production interweaves films by Kate Hackett, dance films choreographed and directed by Benjamin Millepied (Black Swan), and the words of Leonard Cohen spoken by Performance Today host Fred Child, with the music of Pulitzer Prize winners William Bolcom, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Kevin Puts, and composers Nico Muhly, and Lev Zhurbin. To learn more about the Portals Project CLICK HERE.

ABOUT TIM FAIN
With his adventuresome spirit and vast musical gifts, Tim Fain has emerged as a mesmerizing new presence on the music scene. The “charismatic young violinist with a matinee idol profile, strong musical instincts, and first rate chops” (Boston Globe) was, most recently, seen on screen and heard on the soundtrack of the film Black Swan, and heard as the sound of Richard Gere’s violin in the film Bee Season. Selected as one of Symphony andStrad magazine’s “Up-and-Coming Musicians,” Fain captured the Avery Fisher Career Grant and a Young Concert Artists International Award. As The Washington Post recently raved, “Fain has everything he needs for a first-rate career.”
