THE GALA
The staff and Trustees of Sunset Cultural Center Inc. are pleased to announce our First Annual Sunset Center Gala to support the Monterey Peninsula's premiere performing arts organization. The Gala will be on Saturday, May 11, 2013 beginning at 5 p.m. at Sunset Center and includes the Sunset Presents performance of New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players' The Mikado. This glamorous celebration includes: valet parking, champagne arrival, an elegant gourmet dinner from Chef Kurt Grasing with Hahn Estates wine pairings, the theatre performance of The Mikado, intermission ports and chocolate, after party dessert and coffee, commemorative photograph, artist meet and greet, four spectacular live-auction packages, high-end table prizes with a one in four chance of winning, and so much more! Black tie or themed "Mikado" dress encouraged!
A portion of the proceeds from the Gala will support Sunset Center's arts-in-education program, Classroom Connections. This program was established in 2008 to introduce young students to the performing arts through hands-on learning, and is the primary way we pursue our goal of arts education and increasing access to the arts for underserved communities in Monterey County. Classroom Connections has brought the performing arts to nearly 6,500 young people in grades K through 12 since 2008. The program aims to generate an understanding and appreciation for the performing arts and artists among youth and enhance their knowledge, skills, creative thinking and personal growth.
Sunset Center is a community center, performance theater and home for our resident companies and tenants. This is only possible with community support. It is well documented that performing arts are important to communities. They strengthen local economies, encourage creativity, and improve the quality of life. Sunset Center connects our community by bringing the power, passion, beauty and innovation of performing arts to our local and regional audiences. Tickets to the Gala support this important work. It is through the generosity and partnership of our community and our entire organization that we will make this one of our best events of the year! Corporate and media sponsorship opportunities are still available. For information about sponsorship opportunities, contact Barbara Davison at 831.620.2053 or Barbara@sunsetcenter.org.
Gala Tickets (which INCLUDE a seat at the performance) are $225.

THE MIKADO
The Mikado was first performed at the Savoy Theatre in London, England in 1885 and ran longer in its original run than any other Gilbert and Sullivan opera. Since then it has been performed in every possible style - jazz, swing, and even ballet! New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players return to Sunset Center with a charming production in the original mold, combining a modern playfulness with respect for the creators' original intent. The Mikado is possibly the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan opera, with hilarious characters, gorgeous melodies and the musical numbers you know and love like 'Three Little Maids From School Are We,' 'A Wand'ring Minstrel I,' and 'The Sun Who's Rays Are All Ablaze.' Gilbert's lyrics and Sullivan's music are brought to fresh life with lushness and legitimacy by this phenomenal company.
Exquisitely inventive - as traditional as it was effervescent. - The New York Times
