Philip Glass & Foday Musa Suso
Presented by Philip Glass
Part of the Days and Nights Festival
On the heels of last year’s highly successful inaugural Days and Nights Festival the biennial two-week celebration founded and curated by Philip Glass will present a rare duet performance by Glass with world-renowned kora player Foday Musa Suso at Carmel’s Sunset Center on September 1. As a bonus to all ticket holders a free screening on Saturday afternoon of the new documentary "The Lost Bird Project," about artist Todd McGrain's mission to honor North American birds that have been driven to extinction in recent decades. Directed by Academy Award-nominated Deborah Dickson, the film is an elegy to the lost birds as it documents the artist and his mission.
Glass envisions the Days and Nights Festival as encompassing and nurturing the arts in a way that welcomes the future while exploring the seminal developments in the arts throughout history. While last year’s inaugural season reflected keystones in Glass’s career in terms of the selection of works and performers, future seasons beginning in 2013 will delve ever further into the evolution of the arts across time and space.
Glass has chosen Big Sur and the surrounding area, world famous for its beauty, as the future home of the Philip Glass Center for the Arts, Science and the Environment. Currently in the planning stages, the purpose of the Center will be to develop a broad array of interdisciplinary activities including live (filmed and recorded) performance, exhibitions, seminars and publications. “The Days and Nights Festival was my first step towards the establishment of a center,” notes Glass. “The idea was to present a condensed sample of the work intended for the Center.”
The Days and Nights Festival joins in the celebration of Glass’ 75th birthday season, which features performances and events across the globe encompassing every facet of the composer’s decades-long career as a preeminent American composer—opera, chamber music, orchestra music, dance, theatre works and more.
