Over 30 dancers and circus artists perform while Tchaikovsky’s glorious music is sung — a cappella! — by the Bay Area’s multi-talented group, SoVoSó ("Soul, Voice, Song") that include members of Bobby McFerrin’s famed Voicestra. We begin our season with a World Premiere by Trey McIntyre, one of the most sought-after choreographers working today. McIntyre, founder and artistic director of the nationally recognized Trey McIntyre Project, started shaking things up in the dance scene in 1989 as the choreographic apprentice to Houston Ballet, and has continued to delight and amaze audiences across the country. The program continues with Michael Smuin’s Bluegrass/Slyde, an electric piece in which dancers whirl around spinning poles and revel in the bluegrass rhythm. Also featured is Smuin’s classically styled Brahms/Haydn Variations, a lyrical favorite filled with courtly references called "lovely" by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Blessed with uncanny instrumental chops, a multi-lingual voice that is part angel and part siren and a natural hypnotic beauty, Esperanza Spalding might well be the hope for the future of jazz and instrumental music. By the time she was five, Spalding had taught herself to play the violin and was performing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon until she left at age fifteen as concertmaster. The twin sons of icon Ricky Nelson and successful recording artists in their own right, Matthew and Gunnar Nelson have created a tribute show honoring their father’s music. The Nelsons have landed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the only family to reach number one record status in three successive generations. Ricky Nelson Remembered features classic hits of the fifties and sixties, performed with respect and enthusiasm by the twins. "We figured it’s up to us to help keep his music alive," Gunnar says. The Spring program features the romantic ballet Momentum by the internationally celebrated choreographer Choo San Goh. Set to a Prokofiev piano concerto both lush and bold, Momentum is renowned for its clean, sculptural lines and streamlined partnering. We proudly present a World Premiereby Choreographer in Residence Amy Seiwert set to the haunting, powerful music of Mozart’s Requiem. A former dancer with Smuin Ballet, Amy Seiwert has won numerous awards and critical accolades. The San Francisco Bay Guardian says, "[Seiwert] has one of the Bay Area’s most intriguing voices. . . fresh, mysterious, and mesmerizing." Rounding out the bill is To The Beatles: Revisited, a hip, entertaining celebration of the most influential group in the history of rock’n’roll. Originally created in 1984 by Michael Smuin, the piece is set to Beatles hits such as "Help," "Day Tripper," "Sgt. Pepper," and "Come Together" and highlights the charm, the warmth, and the wit of the boys from Liverpool.
