About Sunset Center

1. What is Sunset Center, and the Sunset Theater?

The Sunset Center occupies two city blocks immediately south of the distinctive shops and restaurants on Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea; it is the cultural heart of the community.  It was originally built as a school and auditorium, but in 1964 the City of Carmel bought the building complex and renamed it the Sunset Cultural and Community Center.  In 2001, the Sunset Theater underwent a $21.4 million restoration and renovation, and is now the live entertainment venue for more than 100 events each year.  The Sunset Center, under the management of SCC, Inc., serves four primary roles: a home to five Historic Presenting Partners, who offer over 50 classical music programs each year; a 700+ seat, live-entertainment venue for a wide array of world-renowned dancers, singers, and musicians; a resident performing arts organization with a series of events each year, including Performance Carmel; and a community center with class and meeting rooms available for rent.

2. What is a Presenting Partner?

Sunset Center's Presenting Partners are the many organizations that bring the quality live-entertainment programs to the people of Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula.  Sunset Center is the home of four historic Presenting Partners: Carmel Bach Festival, Carmel Music Society, Chamber Music Monterey Bay, and the Monterey Symphony. .  Together, these four nonprofit organizations offer more than 50 classical music events each year, ranging from the opulence of a full orchestra and chorus performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, to the elegant balance of a chamber orchestra, and the delicate sounds of smaller ensemble works performed by renowned groups such as the Emerson String Quartet.  In addition, Sunset Center is host to live-performance events presented by the Monterey Jazz Festival, and other producer organizations in the Monterey area and beyond.  Lastly, SCC, Inc. is proud to offer a wide variety of live performances through its own series: Performance Carmel and Sunset Center Presents.  Look for new Presenting Partners to join the already diverse group of organizations who consider Sunset Center the cultural heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

22.  I have heard about the Producers' Guild. Where can I get more information?

SCC is proud to announce the formation of the Producers' Guild with special benefits for individuals and families who contribute $10,000 to help underwrite select performances at Sunset Center.  Sunset Center plans to raise a $250,000 Impresario Fund, in order to cover the underwriting risk and expenses for certain performances.  For more Information, select Producers' Guild from the Get Involved menu.

23.  How can I find out about the Sunset Center Endowment Campaign?

The success of the Sunset Center would be greatly enhanced by an endowment to provide ongoing financial support for improvement and growth in the Center. However, during our discussions with the City of Carmel and also with our Historic Presenting Partners ["HPP’s"], we learned that our HPP’s had suffered financially during the years the theater was under renovation. We mutually agreed that for roughly a 3 year period, SCC would not actively solicit endowment contributions which might compete with the fundraising efforts of our HPP’s during this period. In cooperation with the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea and our HPP’s, during the next 2 years SCC, Inc. will be exploring the feasibility of an Endowment Campaign and the proper role of SCC Inc. in such a campaign. Therefore, the earliest an Endowment Campaign could be launched is probably 2008.

24. How can my friends who don't use the Internet find out what's going on at Sunset Center?

Although this Web site is the best way to find out what's happening at Sunset Center, you may tell your friends to read The Carmel Pine Cone, which comes out every Friday and is free.  An updated schedule of events at Sunset Center appears in the Pine Cone's "This Week" section.

25.  What is the Sunset Center newsletter?

As a registered Patron of Sunset Center, you can expect to receive an e-mail newsletter at least four times each year.  This is our principal communication vehicle with our Patrons.  When you register as a Patron or order tickets, you will be asked to provide your e-mail address and be invited to join our e-mail newsletter list.  Through the newsletter we will give you advance notice of upcoming events — well ahead of the general public — in-depth stories about artists or special programs on the schedule and occasionally special offers from our Presenting Partners, local stores and restaurants.

26.  I would like to make a donation to SCC, Inc. to help offset expenses.  How can I do that?

What a delightful request!  You may make a donation to Sunset Cultural Center, Inc. in any amount.  SCC is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt California corporation, so your donation may be tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.  Soon, SCC plans to announce our Benefit Program, with special recognition and rewards for donors.  We will acknowledge your donation in writing.  Please contact donorprogram@sunsetcenter.org, or call Sunset Center at (831) 620 - 2040.

Ticketing and Sunset Center Ticket Services

1. Can I buy tickets to events at Sunset Center through Sunset Center Ticket Services?

Yes.  Once tickets go on sale to the general public, you can order tickets to shows scheduled at Sunset Center.  In December 2004, Sunset Center installed a new state-of-the-art ticketing system to assist us to fulfill your ticket orders promptly and accurately.  Whenever you see a green or yellow ticket availability dot and the Buy Tickets button next to a show on the Events Calendar, Sunset Center Ticket Services is accepting orders for tickets.  Please note that Sunset Center Ticket Services may not have tickets for some events at Sunset Center.

2.  How can I tell if there are tickets available for a performance?

Along with the information about every show in the Events Calendar, you will see either a red, yellow, or green dot next to the date of the event.  We update the calendar every day to tell you the availability of tickets for each event.  A red dot means that the show is sold out.  A yellow dot indicates that there are tickets, but only a few and the show could sell out at any time.  A green dot means that there are plenty of tickets, although the status could change to yellow before too long.

3. How do I order tickets to an individual event?

Ordering tickets online is the best way to get tickets to the shows you want to see.  To order tickets online, find the performance on the Events Calendar, and check the ticket availability dot.  If the ticket availability dot is either green or yellow, click on Buy Tickets.  Fill in the ticket order screen with the required information, and hit Submit.  Your request for tickets will be e-mailed to Sunset Center Ticket Services.  We will fill your request with the best seats available and send them to you by the next business day, and a Ticket Sale Confirmation e-mail will be sent to you.  If your request for tickets arrives less than 10 days before a performance, we will hold your tickets at Will Call, and a Ticket Sale Confirmation e-mail will be sent to you.  For information on the security of online transactions, review the Privacy Policy below.

You can also buy tickets to an event at Sunset Center in person at the Sunset Center Ticket Services on San Carlos Street, near 9th Street, and by phone at (831) 620 - 2048, Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday, noon to 4 pm.

4. Can I see a seating chart of the Sunset Theater?

Yes, you can view a seating chart for the theater online.  Select Seating Chart from the Events Menu.  Positioned on the seating chart are five binocular icons.  Click on any one of the icons to see a photographic view of the stage from that seat in the auditorium.  Seats in the vicinity of the photo have nearly the same sight-lines.

5.  What does Sunset Center Ticket Services charge to handle my ticket order?

Sunset Center charges a nominal fee of $3.50 per ticket.  This fee is added to all ticket sales, except in-person box office sales.

6.  How did Sunset Center decide on a $3.50 handling fee?

Sunset Center believes it is important for us to provide you with excellent service, and we plan to do so at a price below what others charge. We found that most performing arts organizations charge either a handling or convenience fee on all ticket sales.  The fees at many theaters range between $5 and $5.50 per ticket, while many ticket services, including Ticketmaster, charge substantially more. Sunset Center feels that we can just cover our costs with a $3.50 per ticket handling fee. On the other hand, if a patron takes the time to come to our box office, we will waive the usual handling charge as a courtesy.

7. Is there a handling fee if I just walk up and buy a ticket on the night of a performance?

No.  Sunset Center does not charge a handling fee for walk-up ticket sales on the night of a performance.  But remember, oftentimes at the last minute the best seats in the theater are gone, and if the show sells out, you may not be able to get a ticket at all.

8. I have purchased tickets to an event, but they haven't arrived in the mail.  What should I do?

Don't worry.  If you purchased your tickets less than ten days prior to a show, they are being held for you in Will Call at the Sunset Center.  On the day of the event, simply go to the Box Office window at the Sunset Theater, show the Ticket Services representative a photo ID, and you will receive your tickets.

If you purchased tickets to a show more than ten days prior to the performance, your tickets are probably still in the mail to you.  If you have not received your tickets by the day of the performance, simply go to the Box Office window at the Sunset Theater and request a seat pass.  A Ticket Services representative is available at every show with a list of all the ticket purchasers to your event. Simply show the Ticket Services representative your photo ID, and you will be given a seat pass.  There is a $3.50 per ticket service charge for lost or missing ticket replacement.

9.  I have tickets to an event, and I am not able to attend the performance.  What can I do?

Tickets purchased through Sunset Center Ticket Services are not refundable.  If you are not able to use your tickets, we encourage you to return your tickets to Sunset Center Ticket Services at least 2 days before the event, and we will try to resell them.  For you, this means you may receive a tax deduction to the extent allowable by law; for us, this means that we can offer the tickets to another patron who can use them.

Subscribers to Performance Carmel may exchange tickets to shows they cannot attend for tickets to another show for the same or lower ticket price on a best-available seat basis.  Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that you will get the same seats to another performance; but we will do our best to seat you in a comparable section of the theater.  If you must exchange tickets, it's best if you do so early to have the best selection of seats.

For more information about ticketing policies, select Ticketing Policies from the Events menu.

10.  How do I know if an event has been cancelled?

Occasionally, a show is cancelled.  For up-to-the-minute information on all events at the Sunset Center, visit us online, or call Patron Services at (831) 620 - 2040.  All information about program changes or cancellations is updated daily on the Web site.

Most performances at Sunset Center occur as scheduled, regardless of weather.  If weather concerns should arise, please check with the Sunset Ticket Services office.  The Ticket Services office is open from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday to Friday, Saturday from noon to 4:00 pm, and two hours prior to each show until after intermission.

11.  May I exchange my tickets for another event?

Subscribers to Performance Carmel may exchange tickets to shows they cannot attend for tickets to another show for the same or lower ticket price on a best-available seat basis.  Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that you will get the same seats to another performance; but we will do our best to seat you in a comparable section of the theater.  If you must exchange tickets, it's best if you do so early to have the best selection of seats.

No other tickets purchased through Sunset Center Ticket Services may be exchanged for other tickets.  To learn more about ticketing policies, select Ticketing Policy from the Events menu.

12.  How do I purchase tickets for events not at Sunset Center?

Although several of our Presenting Partners offer events at performance venues other than Sunset Center, Sunset Center Ticket Services does not currently sell tickets to these performances.  Please contact the specific Presenting Partner organization for tickets to events not at Sunset Center.

13.  Does the Sunset Center offer group discounts?

Sunset Center would like an opportunity to work with you to arrange for special group discounts of twenty or more tickets to events.  Please contact us early so that we can make certain you get the best seats at the best price.  To inquire about group discounts, please e-mail us at ticketsvcs@sunsetcenter.org, or call Sunset Center Ticket Services at (831) 620-2048.

14.  Can I purchase tickets online?

Yes.  To order tickets online for an event, locate the event on the Events Calendar, check for a yellow or green ticket availability dot and click on Buy Tickets.  A ticket order screen will appear.  Fill in the required information and hit the Submit button.  Your request for tickets will be e-mailed to Sunset Center Ticket Services.  We will fill your request with the best tickets available, and send them to you by the next business day, and a Ticket Sale Confirmation e-mail will be sent to you.  If your ticket order arrives less than 10 days before a performance, we will place your tickets at Will Call, and a Ticket Sale Confirmation e-mail will be sent to you.  For information on the security of online transactions, review the Privacy Policy.

If you encounter problems ordering tickets online, please call Sunset Center Ticket Services at 620 - 2048, Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday, noon to 4:00 pm.

15. When is the Sunset Center Ticket Services box office open?

Sunset Center Ticket Services is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday, noon to 4:00 pm.  On days when there is a performance at Sunset Theater, the box office window will open two hours prior to curtain time for the show and remain open until the intermission of the performance.  Will Call tickets can be picked up any time prior to a show during our regular business hours or, on the day of a performance, at the Sunset Center Ticket Services window beginning two hours prior to the show.

Yes.  The technology we use to encrypt information as it passes from your computer to ours is called Secure Socket Layer (SSL).  SSL is widely respected as the industry standard in Internet security.  You'll notice that it is used on most e-commerce sites; for instance, Amazon.com uses SSL.  The message that you saw is due to a default setting in your browser.  Browsers are programmed to detect e-commerce functions on a Web page and warn the user about security.  It is possible to disable this warning in the browser settings, but in most cases, the best way to be secure is to read any security information posted on a Web site.
