Call for Art
Sunset Cultural Center invites local and regional artists and photographers as well as non-profit local and regional art associations and other visual artists to exhibit in the Marjorie Evans Gallery. Please direct specific gallery inquiries to the Community Engagement Manager, Elana Kline at 831-620-2046 or elana@sunsetcenter.org. Sunset Cultural Center reserves the right to accept or reject any exhibiting organization or individual and/or individual pieces in a proposed exhibit.
Proposal: Artists who wish to display in the Marjorie Evans Gallery should first submit representative photos of the proposed work for review in addition to a written proposal explaining the intent of the show. The gallery is over 800 sq. ft. and can display 25-50 pieces of art depending on the size of each piece. We can hang pieces of any size up to 6' x 6' as long as they're wired in back. All pieces must be ready to hang or display. We prefer exhibits with a particular theme or story. We will review all proposals and will discuss ideas and options with the exhibitor.
Scheduling: Interested parties may submit proposals for exhibits in the Marjorie Evans Gallery during the application window. Exhibits are up for two months with installation generally occurring on the first business day of the month and removal on the last business day of the following month. If no exhibit is scheduled for the following month, continuation of the installed exhibit may be possible by mutual agreement.
Cost: There is no space rental cost to the exhibitor associated with using the Marjorie Evans Gallery and we charge no commission on any pieces sold; however, there may be charges associated with extraordinary labor, equipment or other aspects required for the exhibit. In lieu of exhibit fees, Sunset Cultural Center welcomes donations to further support our free Community Engagement programs.
Installation and Removal: The exhibitor is responsible for delivering all artwork and special equipment required to display, as well as removing the exhibit. Sunset Cultural Center staff will oversee the hanging process and may override art placement to adhere to venue policy and safety requirements. We have materials to assist in installation but cannot be responsible for providing all necessary or special materials or labor required.
Security, Liability, and Insurance: Sunset Cultural Center and the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea require exhibitors to complete and sign a Gallery Exhibitor Agreement. The exhibitor agrees to hold harmless the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea and Sunset Cultural Center from any and all responsibility for the safety, security and condition of objects on exhibit. The City of Carmel-by-the-Sea and Sunset Cultural Center provide no special security for exhibits.
Display of Prices: Prices may be affixed to labeling; and a complete printed price list may be presented in the gallery for interested buyers. Please provide a price list, contact name, and phone number for purchase inquiries as we refer potential buyers directly to the artist. No piece may be removed from the gallery during the exhibit.
Opening Event: One opening reception is scheduled in association with the exhibit. It is generally held on a weekday from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Sunset Cultural Center will provide the tables, tablecloths and volunteers, and the exhibitor is responsible for providing all the refreshments, serve ware, glasses, etc. The exhibitor may invite personal contacts and Sunset Cultural Center will send electronic invitations to our supporter list.
Publicity: Sunset Cultural Center staff will send out a press release to our media list regarding the exhibit and the reception. Copy and images are to be provided by the exhibitor. There is no guarantee that specific media will publicize the exhibit. Additionally, Sunset Cultural Center staff will design and print a program for the exhibit which includes the artist's bio, story, contact information and images. The programs are printed by us and are kept in the gallery for visitors to take with them. More details provided once accepted.
