Sunset Stories
Julie Almquist: A Family of Sunset Girls
When Ted and Marie Fehring moved to Carmel in 1945, they brought three young daughters with them: Janet, Jean and Joy. Two more girls, JoAnn and Julie, were born later at the old Carmel Hospital.
All three of the older sisters went to Sunset School from kindergarten through eighth grade. Julie had one year there, in sixth grade in 1961–62.
One year was enough to leave a mark. Julie remembers what a beautiful school it was, especially the auditorium, where she performed in a Christmas show. Later, she returned to the same stage for Sing Out performances.
Today, she thinks of Sunset as a cultural and historical treasure and an integral part of Carmel. She is grateful it was preserved, and even more grateful that it was beautifully restored to bring world-class music and performing arts to town, along with space for meetings and art shows.
Julie has no doubt Sunset will keep thriving for the next 100 years as a venue for every kind of gathering. In her words, it is "a magical space that enhances any performance, production or event."
