Schatzi Winter: Fifth Grade, Swings and a Nickel's Worth of Red Hots
Schatzi Winter spent fifth grade at Sunset School in 1962, and more than six decades later, the memories still come back in bright, small pieces.
There was Mr. Hamilton, her homeroom teacher and her favorite. She's fairly sure he taught math. There were ballet lessons, Christmas performances, and the swings on the playground. At the end of the day there was the walk home to Mission Fields.
And there was a bit of mischief. Every so often, Schatzi and her friends would slip off campus at lunch to buy cinnamon Red Hot Life Savers. They cost a nickel.
Schatzi left Carmel after graduating from Carmel High School. Knowing the beautiful old buildings are still standing, and still filled with music and art, makes her very happy.
Her hope for the next 100 years is simple and heartfelt: that the performances go on, and that Sunset is never torn down to make way for high-end condos or other development.
