Sunset Stories
Joan Procter: Memories from Sunset School
Sunset School, 1945. In 2nd grade, the lower playground held the Pottery Room. I made an "ashtray" for my dad & glazed it green. It was a block of clay with a hole dug into it. He said he loved it, though I never saw it in his apartment.
Sunset School, 1946. In 3rd grade, we studied American Indian culture. We built a (physical) pueblo in our classroom. It had 2 stories, a wooden ladder & we could get into it!
Sunset School, 1940s. In my class were Sarah McLoud (Berling) of Carmel and Roger Newell of Big Sur and Carmel Valley. Sarah & I were classmates at Stanford, too. Roger showed up in a tiny Swiss village where we both worked in the 1960s. Our families were pals ever since.
