Sunset Stories
Mike Raggett's Sunset Story
My mother, Hope Thomas Raggett, taught kindergarten at Sunset from 1936 to 1939. I attended Sunset K-8 from 1946 to 1954.
When I was in 1st or 2nd grade, I remember Red Eagle doing Native American dances for us on the lower playground. When I was in 8th grade, my pet tarantula, Oscar, which I had brought to school, escaped, and everyone in the upper part of the school was evacuated, but Oscar was found shortly thereafter in the "Hop Scotch" area of the middle playground. I also remember Mr. Holman, our music teacher and a great athlete, kicking a kickball over the auditorium roof! I still have a copy of all my grammar school class photos.
I remember all the fun times I had as a kid growing up in Carmel attending Sunset School, and since returning to Carmel in 1994, I have enjoyed many performances at Sunset Center. I hope that Sunset Center continues to be the cultural center of Carmel and the Peninsula.
